CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) Abrasives

CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) monocrystalline is the super hard material of high thermal stability, its hardness is just second to diamond. The synthetic CBN crystal is converted from hBN under extremely high pressure (6 G Pa -7 G Pa) and temperature (1400 ¡æ ~1500¡æ). Different from diamond, CBN will not react with iron and nickel elements (steel and super alloy). The combination of thermal and chemical stability and hardness make CBN the most desirable superabrasive crystal for grinding ferrous alloys and super alloy materials.

The high purity monocrystalline CBN crystal is colorless and transparent. However, most synthetic CBN crystals for industrial applications have different colors dependent on the growth environment. During crystal growth process, if crystal contains the amount of element N outweighing element B, the crystal appears yellow color; otherwise, the color turns into black. The crystals with gold, amber, brown colors are between those two conditions and also depend on growth conditions.

The strength of CBN crystal is a predominant factor in determining grinding characteristics. Toughness Index (TI) is commonly used for indicating the strength of the crystal under impact force. TI value represents time needed (seconds) to break down 50% of grains and all those debris pass through the breakdown sieve defined by ANSI and FEPA standards. Lower TI means more friable to the force. CBN crystal due to different growth conditions and processing technology, its thermal stability also varies from product to product. Since significant amount CBN grain are used in vitreous bond application. Crystal thermal stability is a critical factor which tool makers are using to select appropriate crystal to meet their processing requirements.

Thermal Toughness Index (TTI) represents the crystal strength after crystals passes through a heat treatment at 1100¡æ under Ar atmosphere for 10 minutes. Low TTI indicates the thermal stability of the crystal and those crystals may not be suitable for those processed require high temperature. High TI CBN is recommended for electroplating tools, both high TI and TTI are more suitable for vitrified and metal bonded tools. TI from low to medium CBN is more suitable for resin bonded tool. In some cases, crystal with a balanced low TI and TTI is desired for vitrified bond application.
The crystal grinding performance also depends on crystal fracture modes. There are two common modes:
1. Macro fracture, fracture as block chip under high force, which regenerates cutting edges.
2. Micro fracture, fracture through nano-fracture moderate force, which offers continuous sharp cutting points.
